Summit of the Future – Part one

In September 2024 a major international conference will take place at the United Nations (UN) in New York entitled ‘The Summit of the Future’. The UN describes the summit as a once-in-a-generation opportunity to enhance cooperation on critical challenges and address gaps in global governance, reaffirm existing commitments and move towards a reinvigorated multilateral system. Visiting Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre Michael Sanfey believes that for the summit to have any hope of success an element of “creative destruction” is called for.

Is the UN Security Council a dysfunctional dinosaur? Over a prolonged period, it has failed to grapple successfully with numerous transnational challenges. Michael Sanfey, Visiting Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre, argues that the UNSC has had its day and needs to be replaced by something new.
